Home Education Acadmic Program School - About |
Home Education Academic Program School (HEAPS) is a
site for home educators, teachers looking for materials for
their classrooms, and students enrolled in public or
private schools who are looking for a supplement to their
normal coursework. Why HEAPS? The name encompasses the
terms home educators use when searching the Internet, ie:
home, education, academic, program, school. The intent was to tap into as much
search traffic as possible, and at the same time, spell out the catchy acronym,
HEAPS. As time goes on, this site will contain "heaps" of information which home
educators can use for free. Please contribute content to this site. Thank you for
visiting.
Hey, if this is a Home Education site, then why is the information presented in
a public school format? Regardless of what you may think about public or private
schools, these institutions do provide much of the basic information most students need before entering college. Most parents
who are now home educating their children, once
attended these same institutions. Presenting the HEAPS curriculum in a public
school format is simply a way to provide parents engaged
in the daunting task of home education an easy way to gauge the progress of
their children. This format also makes it easier for parents with children
attending school to use this site.
Keep in mind the age and grade divisions
on this site are merely guidelines. You should always allow your child to progress at a speed
he or she feels comfortable with. There is really no reason why an 8-year-old cannot be
doing high-school level math if the child is ready and enjoys the subject.
HEAPS is divided into 4 main sections: |
- Preschool - This section contains
information about babies and toddlers thru age 5.
- Elementary School - The curriculum in
this section is what a child 6-11 years of age is normally required to learn
from Kindergarten thru 5th grade.
- Middle School - The curriculum in this
section is what an adolescent 12-14 years of age is normally required to
learn from 6th thru 8th grade.
- High School - The curriculum in this
section is what a young adult 15-18 years of age is normally required to
learn from 9th thru 12th grade.
